Kasana Joint Community Meeting

July 20th, 2008

Nicholyn Chang and I attended the Kasana Joint Town Council Meeting today, so that we could learn more about some of the major issues that people in the immediate community are concerned with. Several members of the community came together to participate in the meeting. These kinds of gatherings provide a forum for discussion and debate over current issues.
We saw this woman along with other members of the community on the path making their way to the local meeting. The elders in Uganda will often walk long distances to attend community meetings. They are considered wise and therefore their opinion is considered invaluable. At this particular meeting they were discussing the issue of Malaria prevention, which was a topic that Nicholyn and I were very interested in. This man came from a chemical company in Kampala. He was trying to convince the community to allow him to fumigate the area with a safe pest control chemical. There were a great deal of questions raised by the community and debate over the issue.

Salongo, who is a very respected HIV positive member of the community discussed the importance of pit latrine sanitation. He went around the community to conduct a survey and found that most people did not have clean pit latrines. Many latrines were lacking a door and he found that people were not washing their hands properly after using the toilet. He was raising the importance of good hygiene to the community in order to prevent illness and propel them towards a more healthy lifestyle.
These are just a few of the many important issues discussed at the Kasana Town Council meeting. Nicholyn and I now feel we are more on the up and up about local concerns. This kind of information allows Just Like My Child to stay current with community needs.
