Scholarship Program Visiting Day

July 6th, 2008

I went to Kampala to visit the Just Like My Child scholarship recipients at St. Joseph Nsambya Girls’ Primary School. I ate lunch with the girls, toured their classrooms, spoke with their teachers and got updated on any needs they have as well as how they're feeling about school.

(Nalubombwe Josephine, Namata Josephine, Nyangoma Rachael, Nankubuge Veronica)

Nalubombwe Josephine is excelling in Social Studies, which is her favorite subject. Her teacher would like to see some improvement in all other subjects. There is a concern that she may be in too advanced of a class and should have started this current school year in Primary 5 rather than Primary 6, but her teacher says that it is really too early to tell. Her teacher has encouraged her to focus and study hard to advance her scores.

Namata Josephine is excelling in both Science and Social Studies. Her teacher says she is on track and just needs to spend a bit more time studying. Namata seems to take her studies very seriously and I have every confidence that she will succeed. Her teacher is certain that she will go on to Primary 6 next year.

Nankubuge Veronica is excelling in Mathematics. Go Veronica!! Her teacher is very impressed with her improvement and class involvement throughout the school year. Her teacher has every confidence that she will continue to advance as the year progresses and go onto Primary 5 next year.

Nyangoma Rachael was praised by her teacher for being very friendly and social. She is extremely helpful in the classroom and excels at singing, dancing and drama. She has struggled to perform well academically, but her teacher thinks it is best to continue observing her performance throughout the year before making any decisions about retaining her in Primary 2. Nyangoma will have to put in a great deal of effort because she comes from a very poor fishing village where she got very little to no foundation in Primary 1.

The girls and I congratulated Nyangoma on her drawing abilities. Our favorite was the drawing of "Tom sitting on a chair". "Tom" looks as though he may be from a 1980's rock band and his chair seems to be balancing on that poor kittens head.

We giggled a lot! It was so much fun!
