Building the Foundation

February 4th, 2009

I went to Katikamu and found Ben (Project Coordinator), George William (Construction Supervisor) and lots of other workers on the land.

The first pit latrine stance has been built up above ground. Doors and roofing will be added in the coming weeks

We discussed the challenge of the secondary school boys going back to school, which will cause the brick making process to slow down. Ben suggested we try to utilize the laborers that Sister Ernestine had hired for brick making when she was building a dispensary with the congregation of the church in Migeera. I told Ben and George William that I would discuss it with her and see if she could convince the laborers to give Katikamu a good price for making the rest of the bricks.
The community made the decision to use local bricks for the foundation because they will be under ground and absorb water differently.
With George William's guidance the community members and skilled laborers are mixing the cement and laying the foundation of this classroom block
The corners of the foundation are being built up first
Once the corners are completed the foundation along the perimeter is started

Together with Ben and George William we went through the budget and I got receipts from the money I gave Ben during our last meeting. We also went over what materials need to be purchased next. They are planning to level the earth inside of the classrooms next so that they can complete the floor, but they first need to mobilize the community members again to sign up for the work. We scheduled a community meeting for Sunday. Ben and George William will have all of the necessary materials on site for the next stages by Sunday so that the community can come together as unskilled labor to complete that work.
